Wind power became the UK’s leading source of electricity generation in 2024, accounting for 30% of the total energy output, and surpassing all other sources for the first time, according to the National Energy System Operator (NESO).
Renewable energy sources collectively produced more than half of the nation’s electricity for all four quarters of the year, averaging 51% across 2024. The electricity generation breakdown included nuclear energy at 14%, solar power at 5%, hydropower at 2%, and minimal coal usage at 0.6%.
Wind generation set new records in December, with peaks of 22,243 MW on the 15th and 22,523 MW on the 18th, with the latter supplying 68.3% of the country’s electricity that day.
Anil Sayhan, Programme Director at the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership, stated, “These figures demonstrate the remarkable growth of offshore wind and the broader renewable energy sector. The UK’s continued success in wind energy and renewable advancements points toward a promising, sustainable energy future.”
